Blog task: Camerawork analysis

                                 Three camera shots:

1.

In the opening scene there is an over-the-shoulder shot (OTS) We can clearly see that the character is looking at a house in the middle of the woods/forest, we can not see her emotions but we can roughly guess how she is feeling at that moment.

2.

The close up on the characters face at 0:23 shows us the characters emotions whilst writing in her diary, she shows an emotion of happiness whilst talking about the person who saved her. This makes the reader happier as well as the character.

3.

The Establishing Shot at 1:02 clearly shows us that this clip is set in a forest with a cottage of some kind , we can see the whole body of the 2 characters holding hands, this creates a sense of satisfaction and makes us feel quite happy for the 2 characters and attracts attention and makes us want to watch more.

                                         Camera Angles:

1.

The low angle at 0:32 definitely gives of an impression that the bird shown has power and can soar above and the character is lower than the bird, this shows us that the main thing/object is the bird at this point in the clip.

2.

The low angle at 1:36 shows us that now the character has reunited with her parents/family she now has a great power of happiness because she hasn't seen her parents for ages and in reality when you haven't seen your parents for a while, a burst of light/energy fills you and makes you more ecstatic. This has an effect on the viewer because it makes us feel cheerful for the character because many viewers can relate.

                                           Camera Movement:

1.

The camera movement at the start of the clip is very slow and steady, this creates a feeling of calmness and it shows the character is in a very relaxing, easy to concentrate place. As we can see the character is writing in her Diary what had happened to her and she is grateful so this creates a nice atmosphere as shown in the camera movement in the beginning scene.

2.

The camera movement at 1:31 is very fast, this creates an exciting yet shocking atmosphere, this also shows the burst of energy the character got when she saw her parents/family so the camera movement represents the characters feelings towards this.

3.

The camera movement at 0:31 changes and has a sudden, fast reaction to the bird that appeared, this creates a sense of fear and shock because it was very unexpected thing to happen, this is why the camera moved like that to show the disturbance of the calming scene before the bird appeared.

·         Representation – what age group of females? Could this be stereotypical at all?
·         Audience – predominantly males or females and how can you tell?

2) Denotation and connotation (blog)
·         Explore the text in the WaterAid advert and explore the message the producer was trying to convey to the audience.
·         For the Doritos advert, again, explore the message the producers were trying to convey to the audience.

Mise-en-scene Stranger Things analysis

S - The setting is based in several different places of which include a Laboratory, set in Hawkins, Indiana, A bedroom which we only see for a couple minutes, A basement, There is a small amount of fog. The connotations of the Laboratory suggest that maybe there was some type of experiment going on but didn't turn out right. The connotations of the bedroom suggest that there is a reassurance of safety. The connotations of the basement suggests that the producers wanted to create a blood-curdling atmosphere.

L - The lighting is almost entirely dark except there is a small portion of bright lighting (used when the kids were playing that game in the basement), flashing lights and a silhouette. The connotations of the mostly dark lighting create a sense of terror. The connotations of the small amount of bright light could suggest there is not much cheerful things to look forward to in this series/clip. The connotations of the flashing lights indicate there is something which makes us feel frightened. The connotations of the black silhouette lead to the belief that something dangerous is watching the boy.

P - The props used in this clip of Stranger things are a game, lights, a TV, a phone, a pizza box, a gun, bullets, backpacks and bikes. The connotations of the game suggest that it is an unpleasant thing to play as it includes spine-chilling stories of creepy creatures. The connotations of the lights give off a hair-rising impression. The connotations of the gun suggests violence and danger.
