Magazines assessment: Learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW: Some lovely analysis of the front cover using the conventions as evidence.

EBI: You need to use media terminology consistently and pick the most interesting aspects of a magazine's design that allows you to say the most - e.g the masthead.

For Q3, you missed out achieving a higher mark as you didn't quite explore what the values are - appearances are important etc.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully, write down the mark you achieved for each question:

Q1: 2/2
Q2: 5/12
Q3: 3/8

3) Did you get any media terminology wrong in the assessment? Make a note of it here for future revision:

No, I did not get any media terminology wrong in this assessment.

4) Look specifically at question 2 - pick out three points from the mark scheme that you didn't include in your analysis of the unseen Grazia magazine cover.

  •  Media terminology
  • I could've spoken more about the main image
  • I could've spoken more about typography

5) Now look at question 3. Use the mark scheme to identify three points you could have made regarding how Tatler reflects British social and cultural values.

  • The lady's makeup - this would suggest that people value the idea of being beautiful.
  • The title shows us that the readers want to know about what's going on in people's lives as it refers to the word ' tattle '
  • The cover line 'James Corden and his LA lifestyle (with his aristo buddies) ' shows us that the readers value importance and wealth.

5) How are images used to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression).

The images used create interest in the magazine because it consists of: Paparazzi shots which make us we readers that know are unprepared for which give us a hint that they are ' revealing secrets ' conveyed in the name of the magazine ' Reveal '. The use of the pictures of Kelly Brook and Scarlett  suggest that we shouldn't care about the way we look because we should be happy the way we are. The use of the phone in the image of Pete and Katie suggest that Pete is planning something and Katie has a smug look on her face which implies she knows something that nobody else does.

6) What differences can you find between the use of design and typography between Tatler and Reveal? List at least three and explain the effect on audiences.

  • Tatler uses a serif font which suggests that it is a high-brow magazine and Reveal uses a Sans serif font which expresses that it is more of a low-brow magazine.
  • The writing in Reveal is all over the place which conveys that the producers want their readers to know that they have a great deal of information. The writing in Tatler is on each side. This has an effect because Tatler wants their readers to know that there doesn't have to be a lot of information to make it a good magazine.
  • Reveal writes the price on their magazine front cover, this is because this is aimed at lower middle class people and they want their buyers to know that it is an affordable magazine. Tatler didn't put the price on their magazine because they want their readers to understand that price shouldn't be a problem. This clearly indicates that Tatler is aimed at upper class people.
